This is the latest solo movie for the Batman character, and was originally envisioned as a standalone vehicle for Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne within the shared continuity of the DC Extended Universe. Affleck initially singed on to write and direct (in addition to starring), but vacated the director’s chair following the disappointment of Live by Night. Matt Reeves replaced Affleck in 2017, and there were countless rumors that Affleck would also not star in the project. Reeves’ goal is to tell a story that taps into Batman’s standing as the world’s greatest detective.

In January 2019, The Batman was officially dated for release in June 2021 and it was confirmed Affleck would not return in the lead role. Reeves will cast a younger actor to play Bruce Wayne.
